BPS Officer Assaulted After Responding to Structure Fire call.
One person has been charged after assaulting police officers around a structure fire on the 600 Block of 18th Street.
Police and the Fire Department were called late Saturday night to the building that had smoke coming out of the vacant building.
The Brandon Fire and Emergency Services determined that the fire was set by unknown suspects. At this moment, there are no suspects.
It was luckily put out with just minor structural damage, and the owner was advised.
While officers were surveying the scene, two suspects were in the back lane near the scene. After officers attempted to stop them and question them, one of them, a 42-year-old man, became belligerent and uncooperative. The second suspect, a 27-year-old woman, then punched one of the officers while they were trying to help.
The man was released after several hours, while the woman is charged with assaulting a police officer and will appear in court in late March.
