Hockey Brandon Officially Cancels 2020-21 Season
Hockey Brandon’s Board has made the tough decision to cancel the remainder of the 2020-2021 season effective Thursday, February 11, 2021, with the exception of the U15AAA & U17AAA programs, as their leagues have not yet been canceled provincially.
“We’ve been dreading this outcome but felt we had no other option,” says Curtis Storey, Hockey Brandon’s Board President. “The continued restrictions on indoor facilities, unfortunately, forced the decision. We all agreed that we’ve waited as long as we can, and it’s now time to let this season go.”
Despite play at outdoor facilities being allowed, Hockey Brandon is not in a position to move their programming to area community centers. There is just not enough outdoor ice available to support the various divisions and programs in an equitable way and so the decision was made to not pursue it.
If your player is participating in outdoor team-based activities at local community centers, it is important to note that this not being organized through Hockey Brandon. To ensure that your player has valid insurance coverage under Hockey Manitoba, full equipment must be worn at all times.
Hockey Brandon members will receive refunds on registration fees following the return of player team jerseys. Team Coaches will be reaching out in the coming days with specific instructions on how they will coordinate the collection of jerseys. If a team jersey is not returned, a refund will not be provided.
Hockey Brandon is working to have refunds distributed in early March. We appreciate your patience as we work through the process.
In closing, Hockey Brandon would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the volunteers who stepped into various roles of coaching, team management, or safety coordination. Our programs would not be possible without your time and efforts. Together, we worked hard to bring our players a piece of normalcy during these difficult times, and for a good stretch, we did just that. Kids were on the ice and there were smiles behind their masks.
The decision to cancel the remainder of the season was made at a Board Meeting held virtually Wednesday, February 10, 2021.
