Brandon City Council has approved a 1% municipal tax decrease for 2021.
After two days of budget deliberations, Brandon City Council has approved an $83.6 million-dollar operating budget. That is a reduction of $1,931,000 from the proposed budget.
It works out to be a savings of $19 dollars for an average residential property which is assessed at $270,000.
Even with the decrease council was able to make a few enhancements to the budget which includes doubling the back lane dust control budget, create a sump pump or backwater valve assistance program, additional funds for Transit to provide Sunday hours of operation on statutory holidays, and more funding for community centers.
One of the most significant items was the approval for the administration to start the first phase of a major new outdoor field complex on 1st Street and Veterans Way, which may incur a future funding debenture of up to $6 million.
The Council approved budget will now proceed to the public hearing stage, a date for which will be determined in the spring.
